Rammy Women exited the Manchester County Cup at the hands of Manucunian Unity B on Sunday.

After knocking out higher-division side AFC Oldham in the previous round, The Ewes faced an even tougher test when they were drawn against Mancunian Unity B who play two tiers above them.

For the opening thirty minutes, Rammy held Unity at bay, staying well organised and refusing to be overawed by their higher-ranked opponents. This both surprised and frustrated Unity who were limited to innacurate snatched shots until the 31st minute when they finally found a way through the Rammy backline. They went on to add a second 8 minutes later and then converted a penalty before half-time to take control of the contest.

HT 0-3

Unity continued to control proceedings in the second half, adding two more goals before the highlight of the match came in the 70th minute. The referee blew for a foul after Woods was bundled over in the centre circle. Picking herself up, she stepped up to take the free kick and produced the goal of the game – if not the season – with an incredible looping effort that soared over the Unity defence and beyond the goalkeeper’s outstretched hands, dipping just under the crossbar.

Unity scored a further two goals before the end to take their tally to seven, showing why they are currently top of the GMWFL Premier Division.

Whilst the result does not reflect or reward the consistent effort put in by the Ewes, they can still be proud to have put up a good fight against a team who have beaten teams in their own league by much higher scorelines.
