The Ewes Extend Unbeaten Run with Divisional Cup Victory
The Ewes continued their impressive cup form and extended their unbeaten run as they progressed in the Divisional Cup with a hard-fought victory over Ashton on Mersey.
This was the third meeting between Rammy and Ashton this season. Ashton had taken the honours in the first league encounter, while the return fixture just a fortnight ago ended in a draw, leaving The Ewes determined to come out on top this time.
Ashton started the game with only ten players and Rammy looked to capitalise, controlling midfield and putting pressure on the Ashton backline who did well to weather the onslaught. However when The Ewes did break through they weren’t able to hit the target which proved costly as, on 20 minutes, Ashton launched a counterattack down the right, finishing with an impressive looping shot that gave Razaq in the Rammy goal no chance.
Rammy continued to push for an equaliser before the break, but to no avail. Razaq ensured the deficit remained at one when she reacted well to smother the ball just before half-time, preventing Ashton from doubling their lead.
HT 1-0
After threatening a few times early in the second half, The Ewes got their reward in the 53rd minute when Pearson laid off a Downey throw to Woods who rounded her marker and unleashed one of her trademark screamers from outside the box which whizzed in over the keeper’s head.
Although Ashton by now had a full complement of players and were getting forward more, Rammy continued to dominate midfield and showed more of the excellent passing football that they are capable of.
The decisive moment came in the 73rd minute. Hodcroft collected a loose ball in the box, turned, and played it out to Kirk who quickly teed up Woods for her second of the match, a powerful shot from the edge of the box.
Ashton remained dangerous on the break but the Rammy defence dealt confidently with the attacks and the Ewes quickly regained possession each time, looking to extend their lead as the clock ticked down. In the end though, Woods’ brace was enough to take The Ewes through to the next round after an entertaining and, at times, fractious contest.
FT 1-2
The Ewes are now unbeaten in six games and will return to league action on 8th February, looking to keep the momentum and climb the table.
