BITTERSWEET FOR RAMPANT EWES

A sunny Sunday provided the perfect conditions for a cup derby between Westbury Sports Club Ladies and Ramsbottom United Women. Westbury, who play in the division below Rammy, came into the game on the back of a stunning 10-1 league win the week before, whilst Rammy were determined to put right their 4-1 loss from the previous Sunday.

‘The Ewes’ soon found their stride and raced to a 2-0 lead with two great goals from outside the box that sailed in over the keeper – the first from Rachel Daniels into the top right corner, the second from Nat Kirk into the top left corner. Westbury put a couple of chances wide and then pulled a goal back but Rammy increased their lead again before half time through a second Nat Kirk goal, this time a header from a corner.

Vic Westerman scored twice for Rammy early in the second half – a powerful header from a Rachel Daniels cross and a one-on-one with the keeper – and Nicole Duffy added a sixth when she dispossessed a defender and slotted the ball away. Westbury fought back scoring twice before Nicole Duffy rounded off the scoring with her second and Rammy’s seventh, a lovely low shot from a narrow angle on the right which ended up in the bottom left of the net.

Rammy were all smiles having got their first win since pre-season, but unfortunately there was a sting in the happy tale. A few hours after the game finished they were found to have inadvertently fielded an ineligible player (registered one day shy of the required 14 days) and were removed from the competition meaning that, despite the result, it will be Westbury Sports who play Oldham Athletic in the next round in November.
