UP AND RUNNING WITH CROMPTON POINT

Crompton Ladies 1
Ramsbottom United Women 1

Sunday 14th September

An unexpectedly depleted Rammy team lined up at the earlier time of 1pm, kickoff having been brought forward due to a less important Greater Manchester fixture later in the day!

Crompton showed their threat as early as the third minute when Rammy keeper Simpson did well to smother the ball at the feet of an attacker, and they had several more shots in the opening 15 but none was on target. Rammy’s first real chance came in the 16th minute but the shot was wide, and Crompton followed soon after with a wide shot of their own.

Both teams continued to battle hard on the sloping grass pitch but it was Rammy who made the breakthrough when, in the 31st minute, a superb tackle from Westerman in defence launched the ball upfield. Initially it dropped to a Crompton player but she was swiftly dispossessed by Daniels who strode into the box and slotted the ball away low past the keeper, scoring Rammy’s first ever league goal. ‘The Ewes’ saw out the first half well and were deserving of their lead.

The first part of the second half was an even affair with the teams cancelling each other out and neither creating much in the way of chances. Kicking uphill, sub-less Rammy came under increasing pressure as the half wore on but held firm with a series of last-ditch tackles and confident goalkeeping, until with 8 minutes to go the referee adjudged that a Crompton player had been tripped in the box and pointed to the spot. Crompton converted the penalty and levelled the scores. Both sides pushed for a winner but, as with their friendly back in July, they had to make do with a draw.
